Design choices can make or break your lawn sign.
Even if you bulk order hundreds to save on costs per lawn sign and have them placed perfectly, they won’t help your goals if people can’t read them.

WHAT SHOULD YOU PUT ON YOUR LAWN SIGN?
A well designed lawn sign should include only the essentials:
- Your main message or offer
- A phone number or website
- Your logo or brand name
Keep it to 5–7 words max whenever possible. Why? Most lawn signs are seen by drivers and passengers in vehicles driving by. Depending on the speed of the vehicle people only have a few seconds to safely read and absorb your message.
Less is more! This is especially true for political lawn signs where the primary goal is name recognition.
WHAT IS THE BEST FONT SIZE FOR LAWN SIGNS?
For the best readability, make sure your primary message or headline is at least 3-4 inches tall and the rest of your secondary text is at least 1-2 inches tall.
If people can’t read it in 3 seconds, it’s too small.
Choosing the most legible font styles helps a lot here too. Normally we’re all about branding consistency, but if the font you use in your logo and other forms of advertising is not easily readable in a short amount of time, consider swapping it out for a more standard font type.
WHAT COLORS WORK BEST FOR LAWN SIGNS?
When it comes to colors, high contrast is key (e.g. black and yellow, white and dark blue, red on white etc.,). If you’re using lawn signs for business advertising, try and stay as true to your business branding as possible.
Avoid low contrast combinations such as light gray and white and overly busy backgrounds. Just like Josh Groban likes his ladies to pop, so do viewers when it comes to lawn sign colors.
SHOULD LAWN SIGNS BE SINGLE OR DOUBLE SIDED?
It depends on where you’re planning to place your lawn signs and what their purpose is.
- Single-sided works if traffic flows one direction or you’re only looking for 1 lawn sign for a birthday or graduation.
- Double-sided increases visibility and exposure in most cases.
The majority of the time, double-sided signs deliver better results than single sided.
AVOID THESE COMMON LAWN SIGN DESIGN MISTAKES
- Too much text
- Fonts that are hard to read
- Poor color contrast
- Cluttered layouts
